Recently Charlie Fay from Bugalwena Health Service spoke of his involvement in starting up the Bugalwena Men's Group. This is Charlie's story.
Bugalwena’s Men’s Group was established with the notion of getting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island males together for a yarn and a feed. The idea we had was to set up a place (safe Place) where our lads could gather and tell their stories and talk of different issues such as health, relating to their journeys in life and community.
We have 15 males that regularly attend gatherings. The men’s group is held every fortnight on a Thursday. There are quite a few elders, so the younger males can yarn and be guided by their wisdom. It is also a chance for the younger lads to be able to let the elders know about what is happening in their lives, this is all done by transfer of knowledge.

Gariwerd Camp 2009 - CEO Report |
|
Well, what can I say about the Mibbinbah Gariwerd training camp; it was more of a healing camp for all present. A number of personal stories were told over the weeklong event and some surprised even the closest people to those who were sharing their stories. It was one powerful and emotional week for all concerned and as some have commented; ‘life changing.’
The staff at Tandara Lutheran camp were fantastic hosts and made us feel welcome and special, even after a wayward boomerang went smashing through a window “eh Paulie”
The venue was set with the perfect backdrop of Gariwerd (the Grampians), the surroundings were absolutely beautiful and very spiritual.
In all there were 46 participants, down a little on what we were expecting but due to a few minor issues some lads were unable to attend. There were lads from all over Australia and all walks of life including CEO’s, Doctors, field workers and the homeless just to mention a few.

Bugalwena Diabetes Camp 2009 Lake Ainsworth Lennox Heads |
|
Mibbinbah champion and all round good bloke Charlie Fay recently coordinated a diabetes camp at Lake Ainsworth, Lennox Heads in Northern NSW with Vicki Eastaway Diabetes and Cardiovascular Nurse on behalf of Bugalwena Aboriginal Health Service Unit.
The aim of the camp was to provide education and support to Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander people who have diabetes or are in the high risk category of developing the disease.
The camp was held over a five day period with a series of workshops and activities developed for attendees to participate in. A survey was conducted at the beginning of the camp in order to understand what individuals hoped to achieve from the five days. Each person’s weight, blood pressure and height were assessed so a comparison could be made at the conclusion of the camp on the participants progress.

Mibbinbah Invited to the 3rd National Men’s Shed Conference |
|
Hobart, Tasmania, August 2009
As the leading organisation for supporting and resourcing men's sheds across Australia, the Australian Men’s Shed Association plays a pivotal role in assisting non- Indigenous men dedicated to their health and well-being.
Isolation, loneliness, depression and anxiety loom as health related issues for many men. In Australia, men's sheds play an important and practical role in addressing these and other concerns. Men’s sheds can help connect men with their families, communities and mainstream society. With many others, Mibbinbah Limited Chair, Rick Hayes, played an invaluable role supporting the movement with his report, Men’s Sheds: Exploring the Evidence for Best Practice. It was co-authored with Shelby Williamson and is referred to constantly.
